Standing in the driveway with a bag of fertilizer and a spreader is usually when the questions start. How much do I actually put down, and will this work with the spreader I already own? The goal with any fertilizer application is simple: give your lawn what it needs, evenly and efficiently, without overthinking it.
The right application rate depends on the current condition of your lawn. Applying the correct amount helps ensure your grass gets the nutrients it needs without waste or uneven results.
For a standard application on a lawn that’s in decent shape, apply 2 kilograms per 100 square metres, or 1,075 square feet. At this rate, one 7.14 kilogram bag will cover approximately 330 square metres, or about 3,550 square feet. This rate is ideal for maintaining healthy growth, colour, and overall lawn density.
If your lawn is thin, stressed, or recovering from damage, a higher application rate can help support recovery. For lawns in poor condition, apply 4 kilograms per 100 square metres. This provides additional nutrients to help the grass fill in, strengthen, and improve turf density, especially after periods of heat, drought, or heavy use.

Because spreader designs and calibration vary by brand and model, we recommend setting your spreader in the middle of its rate range rather than starting at the highest setting. Apply half of your fertilizer walking up and down the lawn, then apply the remaining half going across the lawn in the opposite direction. This approach helps reduce missed spots and heavy areas, especially on larger or irregularly shaped lawns. Once applied, water the lawn to move nutrients into the soil where they can be absorbed by the grass.
If you’re unsure about your spreader settings, it’s best to start conservatively. You can always make an additional light pass if needed, but correcting an application that’s too heavy is much harder. A little patience at the start goes a long way toward better results.
